How to Prepare for Your Lead Inspection
Proper preparation is crucial for a successful lead inspection. Follow these guidelines to ensure your property meets all safety standards and passes inspection with flying colors.
Clean All Windows and Floors
To maximize the chances of passing your inspection, thoroughly clean any debris from the floors and window sills. The inspector will take samples from these areas, so clean surfaces with a wet wipe and clean water for the best results.
Conduct a Visual Inspection
Ensure that all paint is intact. Your property should be free from any peeling, chipping, cracking, or flaking paint to pass the visual inspection.
Vacuum Thoroughly
Remove any dust or debris and clear any obstructions from the area. Using a HEPA vacuum is recommended to clean all surfaces for the most effective results.
Failed Testing
If any paint is not intact or there is dust and debris on the floor, the technician will not take dust wipe samples. In such cases, you will need to reschedule for a re-test once the issues are resolved.
What Steps Should You Take if Your Property is Not Lead-Safe?
1. Receive Results After the dust-sampling test, you will receive a report indicating if your property meets safe lead levels. If safe, proceed to step four.
2. Remediation or Abatement Remediation involves mitigating associated health risks by bringing your home up to lead safety standards. Abatement involves permanently removing lead from your home. Hire a lead-safe certified contractor for either approach.
3. Re-Test Once remediation or abatement is complete, our lead-safe technician will conduct a follow-up dust sampling test at a discounted rate.
4. Lead-Safe Certification After receiving lead certification, landlords should submit the results to the City’s Lead Certification Submission System.
